The Legend of Krampus

Krampus is a horned, demonic figure from Alpine folklore, known as the dark counterpart to Saint Nicholas. In Central European tradition, Krampus appears during the Christmas season to punish misbehaving children, contrasting with Saint Nicholas, who rewards the good. Depicted with sharp horns, fangs, and chains, he carries birch branches or a sack for taking away naughty children. 

The origins of Krampus are rooted in pre-Christian paganism, where he was likely a symbol of winter’s harshness. Today, Krampus has become a cultural icon, celebrated in festivals like Krampusnacht, where people dress in costumes to honor this frightening figure.
